Wake Forest went on a 3-point shooting tear to build a large lead, but forward John Collins scored all 24 of his points without the benefit of a long-range shot in a 103-81 victory against UTEP in the opening round of the Charleston Classic on Thursday afternoon at TD Arena in Charleston, S.C.
Collins was 9-for-10 from the field and 6-of-9 on free throws to provide some low-post scoring, while his teammates took care of the perimeter offense.
Guard Bryant Crawford poured in 20 points, forward Dinos Mitoglou had 18 points, and reserve guard Keyshawn Woods added 16 points for Wake Forest (3-0).
Dominic Artis scored 24 points for UTEP (1-1), which shot 60.3 percent from the field in the first half yet faced a 19-point halftime deficit. The Miners were charged with 10 turnovers in the opening half and 18 for the game.
The Demon Deacons made 13 of 20 attempts from 3-point range in the first half on the way to a 63-44 edge at the break. That matched the most 3s in coach Danny Manning's three seasons, with six players making at least one 3-pointer. Mitoglou led that list with four 3s.
Wake Forest's point total was the largest first-half production in more than 25 years.
The Demon Deacons meet No. 3 Villanova (3-0), a 76-65 winner against Western Michigan earlier Thursday, in Friday's semifinals.
Wake Forest took only one 3-point attempt -- and missed it -- in the second half. Still, the final tally marked the first time the Demon Deacons reached the 100-point mark under Manning even though Wake Forest didn't score in the final 2:42.
Guard Omega Harris added 16 points and center Matt Willms had 13 for UTEP, which was 5-of-14 on 3-pointers.
